What are the J2EE job roles?

Hello,

I have just joined a company as a J2EE Systems Engineer (aka Developer; I have been doing solid J2EE for about 1 year) and now, I am trying to plan on what my career targets are in the short and long term (6mo, 1 yr, etc.).

Some roles that I see on job websites like monster.com, are: architect, and team leader.

Currently working in a govt organization in India, I am having 1 year 9 months experience.
In span of 1 year, I have just written 10 java programs including 2 programs using jsp and servlets.For past 9 months I have not touch coding. I was given a work of doing risk assessment of our project as per iso 27001.worst part was everything is outsourced.
I am currently looking for shift. My biggest worry is what will recruiters expect out of me? Some say it is up to you how you perform in interview. But any smart recruiter will come to know that in spite of me having almost 2 years experience I have just done a work what other perosn will do 6 months.It is a must to have good hands on experience rather than theoretical knowledge. Why Application Server Specific Job requirement?

As we all know J2EE is specfication and helps developer to keep away with vendor locking.
I mean if you know JSP/Servlet or EJB Spec Applicaiton server doesn't matter for a developer job.
But i got rejected in one interview just because I didnt work on WebSphere/WebLogic ...

Why recruiter wants to specific to WebSphere/WebLogic even I worked 3 yrs in Tomcat and has some exp in JBoss...

Note only this case I found may job ads specifying exp of one of the two.....

Now what to do for me ..as we know Both are commercial produts so I cannot download and run to learn...
Alos as all App server follow specification what new things employer looking while specifying both app server ??

I got a offer from a company 01 and i am going to get another offer from another company 02 . I like to know can we discuses with the salary what we got from the company 01 with company 02 to give more than that.

If we ask what the HR person will think.Otherwise how can we ask them to give more salary ??.

I could see that the software job market in India is bit dull when compared to what it used to be before a couple of years. Is this slow down expected to go forward for some more time?
(I was not in the market during the 9-11 slow down and so I haven't experienced it so far)

With the steep increase in prices in India (raw material, resource, and almost everything) over these years, is the offshoring model (especially to India) still profitable to the companies? I'm not sure about the markets in other offshore hubs like China. How the outsourcing / offshoring companies are planning to take this situation?

good faith, seemingly its hard to find, I told the last "victim" of my soliciting attempts a story, about a man who went to the bank with a new idea was rejected and the next bank.. and the next bank.. and the next.. ninety seven times apparently till some manager said "why not" and gave a loan, Im getting a good idea of how the man felt on loan application 45.

Hi.
Last week I got interviewed by one of the biggest companies in the world (phone interview).
The interviewer asked me to solve a problem he gave to me.
I admit, my solution isn't top notch but I was so afraid due the company's big name.
According to them, they care about thinking, not the correct answer for every question.
Today, I got an email from them explaining to me that they don't have a position for my qualifications.
Yes, I admit, I was not in the top form but I wasn't that bad also.
I feel as I lost the biggest chance in my life...

I have completed my BTech degree in Computer & Engg. I am SCJP 5.0(97%) and SCWCD 1.4(86%) certified. I have been placed on-campus and my joining will come after some months. But I know that no good JAVA projects are there and my skills will be totally get wasted. I don't know what to do at this situation?
Good companies require atleast 3-4 years of experience. That's why my moral is much down. I have much interest in JAVA technology and want to learn more and more and do more certifications. But at the same time, I want to work for a good organization where I would be offered good projects. Simply learning is not enough until we have practical skills.
Please give me suggestions how should I utilize my time now?

Hi Ranchers,

Please advice about cordys after 9 years of Java / J2EE experience, I am typically not interested for this, but since there is a crunch of project, I am asked to work on this, my concern will it add value to my presence knowledge or career prospective.

Note: I am working as a lead and thinks that lot needs to learn on Java/ J2EE.

I have around 8 years of experience in domains like Healthcare, B2B. Now I got a offer from a media(TV) to work as a software engineer. The package is very good, 40% more than current. I have two question
1. Is it worth leaving Healthcare Domain and joining the Media
2. Any one knows what are the actual roles and responsiblity in Media as a software engineer ? (I did ask them but they said its nothing different than other Industry)

How To Join an Open Source Project?

I have been advised to join good open source projects by my seniors. After I thought over it, it seems like a really good idea to learn new things. But as I thought about it, some questions crept my mind.

How does one join an open source project? Can you provide some inputs on how to begin?

I have been through some pointers as in, joining the mailing list, submitting patches. But before submitting patches I guess you need to know about the domain and entire product. This is quite an overwhelming job.

If you have joined an open source project, can you tell me some tips to put the foot in the right direction and also please state which open source project to choose.

A little while ago, I saw a site, I thought it was Workopolis.com, that allowed you to type in a job skill, and it would show you a graph over time of how popular that keyword has been.

So, if you typed in Hibernate, you'd see nothing in like 2000, and then a really fast upswing. If you typed in MCSE, you'd see a large spike in about 1999-2000, and then really slow or even negative growth towards 2008.

Anyways, it was a great way to see what technologies were hot, which technologies were fading, and which technologies are really in demand right now.

If anyone knows where the heck I saw that site, please let me know.

I was called up by a company in U.S. and they offered to train me in a specific technology and then be employed(by them) on a J1 Visa. The training is supposed to be for one month after which I will be on their payrolls. My question is it legal for a client company to use services of a company that employs people on J1? Is the client company only interfacing with the consulting company or is it also supposed to check this detail about visa status of each and every person?

I see all these programming jobs and they want you to know every language and every language on an expert level. To me this sounds incredibly dumb.

I mean I've been doing .NET programming for a year now, and I have a BS in computer science. My cs1 and 2, data structures and software engineering classes were all in java and were heavily programming intensive.

Would it be likely for me to get a job as a java programmer? Or do I need to get a certification to re-ensure employers that i'm "worth while".

I am new to these forums but they seems interesting. I have got few doubts about my career progression, which hopefully resolve here.

Before i ask you something i give a brief overview about my career so far. I have done Masters in Software Tech. and worked as an XSLT developer in a bank for around 1 and half year. I also have good knowledge but not commercial experience of these technologies;

2 Spring MVC Framework
3 Struts Framework
4 UML/XML Technologies

How does one get a Java/Java EE job. I'm am a experienced developer with many years experience in the industry. I also have a SCJP and well on the way to getting the SCWCD. However, my experience is that my certification does not seem to cut it and that all of the jobs seem to require specific java experience and a multitude of tools and methodologies e.g. hibernate, spring, RUP, weblogic, JSF etc.

Does anyone have any helpful advice? For example, what certification or technologies or tools should I study first to get a position.

What do you think is more valuable down the line as we progress in our career-domain expertise or technical expertise.?Consider the scenario where you need to select 1 of the 3 candidates for a tech lead or a team lead position.
Candidate-1 is technically very strong but doesn't have any domain knowledge.
Candidate-2 has good domain knowledge but not technically good.
Candidate-3 knows a little bit of domain and little bit of technology..

I reside in Hyderabad, I have completed my B.TECH in Computer Science in 2005, i have worked as a webmaster for one year, then last year, i joined j2ee course and completed training in May, after completion, i am not getting enough calls for job interviews, should i go for java certifications(SCJP) for better job prospects or wait for some more time?

Hi All,
I'm planning to shift my career to J2EE after 6+ years experience in Oracle development and tuning.
I'm SCJP, SCWCD, and on the way for SCBCD and SCJWSD, but I lack the real hands-on projects, I'm doing self-taught project, but I see greater learning opportunity in participating in open source projects and getting to know how people in the industry are developing.

I'm wondering how can I start participating? I tried with GlassFish but I found difficulty understanding the big picture.

Java Swing job in an investment bank in India - Is my scope too narrow?

Hello All, I am having 5 years of work experience all in Java technologies (with last 3 years working on server side of trading platforms). I am moving from US to India - having a decent offer with an investment bank (16lpa and 2.5 joining bonus). My work will be mainly on developing swing gui used by traders for pricing and trading instruments - that will give me excellent domain knowledge. After 3 years in server side, just wondering by taking up swing am I restricting my options in future as my scope becomes too narrow? Just sceptical about Swing... Donno whether my worries are correct or misplaced.... Any thoughts would be highly appreciated.

Remote contracting/consulting?

I am in the point in my career where my current job is drying up and I am looking of new challenges. Has anybody out there done remote contracting jobs? What I mean by this is to live in one location, yet take contract jobs throughout the country with a minimum amount travel? For example, say somebody is a expert in Swing or SWT or whatever other technology. Locally to them the job prospects might be limited, but nation wide there must be a very large pool of jobs to pull from that are looking for that technology. I guess the main problem is finding contracts that would allow you to work remote and at the same time keeping the travel to a minimum.

Misleading job title "Techlead" at this company

This company interviews for Techlead positions and in their Ads on job portals while they make it clear that "You are expected to take a hands-on approach" they don't say it is not at all a Technical Leadership. Isn't this lying? During the interviews the HR person said it it not people management, but technical leadership, and the responsibility would include little bit of providing technical mentoring and more of hands on coding. I was offered the job and I was happy that I was finally making the much needed leap from being a code monkey to Technical leadership. Today I had a phone conversation with the hiring manager. He made it clear that the "Techlead" is just a tag and the work is 100% individual contributor. Isn't this lying?
